A breast lift or mastopexy, with breast augmentation is a combination procedure that lifts sagging breasts while also increasing the cup size of the breast. Aside from improving the size and overall appearance of the breasts, a mastopexy with breast augmentation benefits patients by keeping breasts firm and perky for many years. Gravity does not have the same effect on implants as it has on natural breast tissue, so implants will retain their height and shape more easily.
Like the rest of the skin and tissue of the body, the breasts change with age. These changes, not always welcomed, can be intensified by pregnancy, genetics, stretch marks on the breasts, and weight gain or loss. Women seeking rejuvenation of the breasts are often displeased with two aspects of their breasts: lack of breast volume, and sagging skin and tissue with descent of the nipple. An augmentation-mastopexy procedure combines both a lifted breast appearance and an enhanced breast volume in a single operation.
Breast implants add to the overall results of the breast lift procedure by lifting the breast and increasing the cup size in a single step. Many women also benefit from the combined procedure by extending the results of a breast lift. Gravity, pregnancy, and changes in weight can all cause your breasts to sag, even after breast lift surgery. Implants, however, are less affected by gravity than human breast tissue. When you undergo the combined breast augmentation and mastopexy procedure, your breasts will typically remain full and perky for longer, making future procedures less likely.
The combination breast augmentation and breast lift procedure is performed using methods similar to a standard breast lift, only with an implant inserted into the breast beneath your pectoral muscle or mammary gland during the procedure. You will have a choice of either silicone or saline breast implants. Implant size is based on a combination of patient preference and overall chest and body size.
Dr. Schwartz will then make an incision to remove the excess skin that causes your breasts to sag at his practice in New York City. The three most common incision types are the peri-areolar incision (doughnut shape), vertical/limited incision (peri-areolar with vertical extension down to the breast crease in a lollipop shape), and the “inverted T” or “anchor” incision (peri-areolar with vertical and horizontal incision beneath the breast fold). The type of incision used depends on your breast shape and size.
Implant type (silicone vs saline), volume (size), placement (above or below the muscle) and incision type will be discussed in detail during your consultation with Dr. Schwartz at his practice in New York City.
Augmentation/Mastopexy is typically performed on an outpatient basis and can be done with either a general or sedation/twilight anesthetic. It takes approximately two to three hours to perform Discomfort is minimal and well-controlled with oral pain medication. Swelling occurs but usually begins to subside by the third or fourth day. Some degree of swelling may persist for longer periods. A well-fitted bra is worn day and night for three weeks. Most patients return to work in approximately one to two weeks and can resume strenuous activity in approximately three weeks.
The same complications may occur in joint breast augmentation and lift that may occur in the separate procedures. These include infection, mild asymmetry, and changes in nipple sensation and position years later, it may be necessary to have an additional skin tuck to treat the continued effects of gravity. These will be discussed in greater detail during your consultation with Dr. Schwartz at his practice in New York City.
