Add Youthful Fullness to Sunken Cheeks

Juvederm Voluma by Dr. Schwartz in New York City & Manhattan

A universal side effect of aging is loss of volume in the cheeks. Over time, it is common for fat in the mid-face to migrate downward toward the jawline. The cheeks lose their youthful roundness and the cheekbones lose definition. Allergan developed a dermal filler product to exclusively treat this problem. Juvederm Voluma XC is the first FDA-approved cosmetic injectable to instantly add volume to the cheek area.

How Does Juvederm Voluma Work?

With age and gravity, the body’s supply of hyaluronic acid (a naturally occurring substance that helps the skin maintain structure and volume) starts to diminish. One of the side effects is the cheeks lose their youthful contour and shape and appear sunken-in.

Juvederm Voluma is formulated with hyaluronic acid to restore healthy looking volume and hydration to the tissues in the cheeks. It can also give the mid-face a subtle, natural-looking lift. Voluma uses Vycross technology, which is formulated for smooth application and long-lasting results.

Candidates for Voluma

Voluma is designed for adults with noticeable loss of volume in the cheek area. The cheeks may look sunken-in and the skin may sag. Suitable candidates should not be pregnant, nursing or have a history of severe allergic reactions. Ideally, candidates should not have a history of excessive scarring or pigmentation problems. In addition, candidates should not take any medications that could raise the risk of excessive bleeding.

Dr. Schwartz and his team conduct a pre-treatment consultation with each candidate to review their medical history and current medications. This information is used to determine whether Voluma is the best filler option for the individual.

Treatment Details

Voluma treatment is performed in Dr. Schwartz’s Manhattan office. The appointment should take an hour or less. Prior to injections, specific points on the cheeks are marked as guides to identify where the Voluma should be injected.

Small amounts of Voluma are injected into the marked points. The product is formulated with lidocaine to numb the treatment area and prevent discomfort. The gel instantly plumps up the cheek structures and tissues. It also draws much-needed hydration to the surface of the skin for a smooth, natural result. The number of injections depends on the degree of correction necessary and size of the cheeks. The amount of product is carefully controlled to deliver the desired results without over- or under-correction.

Recovering from Voluma Treatment

Voluma treatment has virtually no recovery time. Patients can return to work or their normal routine almost immediately after their appointment. It is important to avoid rubbing or applying any pressure to the treated area for several hours, as this may cause the product to migrate around the face.

Thanks to the Vycross technology, Voluma results can last up to two years. The body eventually absorbs the hyaluronic acid, at which point repeat treatments are needed to maintain results.
