Women may decide to undergo plastic surgery to enlarge or reduce their breasts, to achieve a balance in size or shape for their breasts or to reconstruct one or both breasts after mastectomy. Men may also wish to reduce the size of their breasts. Whatever the motivation, breast surgery is safer and easier now than ever before. Please review the list of services we provide to help you make an informed decision and achieve the most satisfying results.
Breast augmentation is one of the most frequently performed cosmetic surgery procedures in the U.S. and one of our most popular services. Breast augmentation can give women with small or unevenly sized breasts a fuller, firmer, better-proportioned look through the placement of silicone or saline implants in the breast.
Our patients elect to undergo breast augmentation for many different reasons, including increasing breast size, compensating for reduced breast mass after pregnancy, and correcting a congenital breast defect. Under Dr. Schwartz’s expert care at his practice in New York City, patients enjoy great-looking, natural-feeling breasts.
We know that every woman is unique in both her desires and her body shape. With that in mind, Dr. Schwartz takes the time during the pre-operative consultations to learn what each patient hopes to gain from breast augmentation surgery and to decide which implant type and implant placement is best at his practice in New York City. In this way, every one of our patients enjoys completely customized treatment designed with her specific goals in mind.
Breast implants consist of silicone shells filled with either saline (salt water) or silicone gel. In 2006, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) re-approved silicone breast implants for breast augmentation surgery (with few exceptions) and Dr. Schwartz is pleased to offer patients this option at his practice in New York City NY. Implants can be smooth or textured, round or teardrop, each with varying degrees of height, width, and projection. Implants are chosen based on a combination of patient desires and anatomy, since the implant must fit within the width of your chest. During your consultation, at Dr. Schwartz practice in New York City, you will discuss which options are best for you.
The breast augmentation procedure lasts one to two hours and is typically performed with a sedation/"twilight" type of anesthesia. Incisions are made in inconspicuous places on the breast to minimize scar visibility. These locations include:
Dr. Schwartz will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each location during your consultation at his practice in New York City.
Implant placement beneath the muscle of the chest (submuscular) offers many advantages over placement beneath the breast tissue only. These include reduced risk of capsular contracture (post-operative tightening around the implant) and less interference with future mammogram examinations. The muscle also provides an additional barrier over the edge of the implant, which may be important in maintaining a natural appearance, especially in thin-skinned women. Implants placed beneath the breast tissue (subglandular) may be preferred in women who are competitive body-builders or when revisional breast implant surgery is performed in patients who have long-term subglandular implants.
Most patients feel tired and sore after breast augmentation surgery, but this usually passes in a day or two. Most patients return to work within the week. Dr. Schwartz uses dissolvable sutures, so there is no need for removal. Post-operative pain, swelling and sensitivity will diminish over the first few weeks. Patients must refrain from performing strenuous activity and heavy lifting for approximately two weeks.
Scars from breast augmentation incisions will begin to fade in a few months and will continue to fade for approximately one year.
Complications following breast augmentation surgery are uncommon but may include bleeding, capsular contracture, infection around the implant, and breakage or leakage of the implant (implant rupture). These will be discussed in more detail during your consultation.
Regular monitoring of breast implants after breast augmentation is recommended to ensure continuing breast and implant health.
