Double Chin: Causes And Treatment Options

Patients who suffer from extra fat or loose, sagging skin in the neck area often seek solutions for a slimmer profile. Many people choose to have neck lift surgery, liposuction or Ultherapy® to help reduce the appearance of a double chin.

Common Causes of a Double Chin

  • Obesity: The most common cause of double chins is obesity. Obesity results in a lot of excess fat. The fatty tissue must be stored in the body somewhere, and the chin is one of many places the fat can go. As the fat weighs down the skin under the chin, it can cause a wrinkle that gives the appearance of having a second, lower chin (hence the name: double chin).
  • Genetics: Unfortunately, whether you are obese or not, you can have a double chin as a result of genetics. If your family has a history of double chins, then you may develop one as well. That’s because genetics can influence where your body sends and stores fat. To combat your genetics, discuss with your plastic surgeon some of the different options available to cosmetically change the appearance of your neck and chin. Procedures are improved from year to year, so there are several solutions to this common problem.
  • Muscle weakness: Although not as common, it is possible to develop a double chin if the neck is never strengthened or stretched. Without any exercise, the chin can become flabby.
  • Aging: Of course, dieting and exercise can’t always help a double chin. Sometimes that’s because your double chin is caused by aging. As you grow older, your skin sags and wrinkles. If that causes a double chin, surgery is often the only solution.
